The last.fm 'albums i own' challenge

cds_lastfm.jpgUp late tonight: too much coffee and an idea. It may be a considerable task, but the result - ideally, and subject to perhaps two prerequisites - would enable me to press a button and play random tracks from almost my entire CD collection. Previously a dream (I normally get to about 15Gb of ripped/downloaded music on a hard disk before it gets replaced) could this now be plausible?

I stumbled on the idea on another random last.fm user's profile, fr0stbyte. The 'albums i own' tag. By filling this tag for my own account would provide a radio station for all these tagged albums.

Sure enough, there are loads of other peeps doing this too - looks like one could get some interesting statistics or trends from that. Nirvana and Radiohead! Who'd have guessed?

Aaaanyway, I began tagging album after album as 'albums i own'. So far, I've been using the site to 'mass tag' all the albums I own by each artist in turn from my top weekly/overall artists charts. Too many tabs with too much JavaScript makes Firefox cry, but I've been keeping myself occupied with some random tracks from my drive and via various last.fm stations, tagging as I go using the last.fm player.

After an hour or so of clicking, listening and scrabbling bits of this article together, I was up to #156 in my overall artist charts, about half way through the somewhat staggering list of artists I've scrobbled so far.

The result so far? A list of 286 albums owned (I did add some singles/EPs here and there)... have a listen to the radio station (you can play the station in-situ if you're not a last.fm user, provided you have Adobe Flash Player). Once the bulk is done I could continue tagging albums as I listen, buy, or download. But look!

some of my collection

And that's just half of it...

Those prerequisites

  1. last.fm don't have everything available to stream, yet. I doubt whether a lot of rarer, older stuff would ever get added. Also, bad tagging by last.fm users can cause chaos with album listings: for example, Ginger's double-disced Valor Del Corazón - there are several entries listed.
  2. I have over 1000 CDs. Can I be arsed?

Also, does it work?

Updated

I've updated all the links in the article to work with the new last.fm, hopefully. The embedded radio player is temporarily removed until I suss out whether its still possible.

In the meantime, play my 'albums i own' station on last.fm
